Remove/Change Microsoft Office 365 Business Subscriptions
Microsoft has made it surprisingly difficult to find the option to remove Microsoft 365 Copilot from a business subscription. If you're logged into the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and only see a combined subscription such as "Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Microsoft 365 Copilot", you may assume the Copilot license can't be removed separately.
How they have things setup to switch or cancel your subscription for a user, employee, etc. can be super confusing! So I wanted to make this guide to help folks out with the process.
Prerequisites
- Access to a Global Administrator account
- Access to a Billing Administrator account
- Or access to another account with subscription management permissions
- Access to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center
- An active Microsoft 365 business subscription
1: Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center
- Open the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and sign in with your administrator account:
- Login in with Work or School account credentials with Admin rights..
Once signed in, you'll arrive at the Microsoft 365 Admin Center dashboard.
Step 2: Open Billing > Your Products
In the left navigation menu:
- Select Billing
- Select Your product(s)
This page displays all subscriptions associated with your Microsoft 365 tenant.
Step 3: Select Your Subscription
- Locate the subscription that includes Copilot.
For example:
"Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Microsoft 365 Copilot" - Click the subscription name to open the product details page.
Step 4: Scroll to "Other Subscription Options"
- On the product details page, scroll down and look toward the lower-right portion of the screen.
- You should find a section labeled: Other subscription options
- Within this section, Microsoft provides additional management options for your subscription.
Step 5: Choose "Change to a Different Subscription Option"
- Select: "Change to a different subscription" option
- This link is easy to overlook, but it's the key to removing or modifying a subscription.
- Microsoft will display available replacement plans.
Step 6: Select the Subscription Without Copilot
- Review the available subscription options and select the version that best fits your organization's needs.
- Examples may include:
- Microsoft 365 Business Standard
- Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot
- Microsoft 365 Business Basic
- Microsoft Office Business E5
- And other eligible Microsoft 365 business plans
The available choices vary based on your current subscription and billing agreement.
Step 7: Confirm the Change
- Follow the prompts provided by Microsoft and confirm the subscription change.
- Depending on your billing cycle and renewal settings, Microsoft may:
- Apply the change immediately, or
- Schedule the change to occur at the next renewal date
- Review the confirmation details carefully before submitting.
What If I Don't See the Option?
If Change to a different subscription option is not visible:- Verify you're signed in as a billing or global administrator.
- Confirm the subscription was purchased directly from Microsoft.
- Check whether you're viewing the actual product details page rather than the product list.
- Contact Microsoft support if your tenant does not present alternative subscription options.

Final Thoughts
Many administrators initially look for a way to remove or change a user's license/subscriptions through license assignments or by canceling add-ons. In some subscription configurations, the real solution is hidden within the subscription details page under "Other subscription options".
